National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) militants today kidnapped seven tribals, including a local CPI(M) leader, from remote Aswini Roajapara village near here.

Police said the seven residents of Ratan Nagar village--four Tripuris and three Chakmas--were going to Aswini Roajapara village near the India-Bangla border to attend a CPI(M) party meeting when they were waylaid by the NLFT gunmen. The incident took place around 0630 hours.

''We are yet to trace the seven villagers. The area is very remote,'' a local police official said.

He said Tripura State Rifles (TSR) jawans from Ratan Nagar and Tuichakma posts had already rushed to spot and launched a massive combing operation.

''We are awaiting detailed reports from the TSR jawans,'' he said.

The Dhalai district Superintendent of Police has also rushed to the spot.

The Border Security Force had been alerted so that the militants could not cross over to Bangladesh with the hostages.

Incidentally, Director General of state police G M Srivastava is currently visiting Dhalai and North Tripura districts.

This is the first major incident of kidnapping by the NLFT militants in the past one year.
