In January 2023, police in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, arrested seven individuals, including a pastor and members of his family, following allegations that they attempted to convert a tribal Hindu family to Christianity through inducements and claims of faith healing. The incident reignited debate over religious conversions and the use of material or emotional influence in matters of faith.
According to the complaint filed by Man Singh, a tribal resident of Hathunia village, he had been suffering from illness for a prolonged period and was advised by a relative to seek treatment at a church in Jhabua district. There, he reportedly came into contact with Pastor Resingh, who provided him with medicines, water, and prayers. As his health improved, the pastor allegedly began visiting his home regularly.
Man Singh claimed that the pastor later urged him to embrace Christianity, stating that his recovery was due to the power of the Christian faith. The complaint further alleged that promises of free education, healthcare facilities, and other benefits for his children were made to encourage conversion. He also alleged that religious rituals were conducted at his residence and that he was declared converted without his consent.
Following information from local residents and community activists, the matter was reported to police. Authorities registered a case against Pastor Resingh, his family members, and several associates. Religious books and other materials were seized during the investigation, and all seven accused were taken into custody.
The case has fueled criticism of conversion efforts based on alleged inducements, financial incentives, or exploitation of vulnerable individuals facing illness and poverty. Critics argue that genuine religious belief should emerge from personal conviction and spiritual choice rather than promises of material benefits or emotional pressure. They contend that using healthcare, education, or financial assistance as tools for conversion undermines freedom of conscience and takes advantage of disadvantaged communities.
Police stated that the matter would be investigated thoroughly and that legal action would proceed according to the evidence gathered during the inquiry.
