A religious conversion case in Pune has attracted attention after police arrested two individuals, including an American national, over allegations that they attempted to persuade a local resident to convert to Christianity through promises of financial support and personal well being.
According to the complaint filed by 27 year old Sunny Bansilal Danani, three individuals visited his residence and allegedly encouraged him to adopt Christianity. The accused were identified as Schaefer Javin Jacob, a resident of California, Stiven Vijay Kadam, and a 16 year old minor. Danani alleged that the group attempted to convince him that accepting Jesus as the only true God would bring peace, prosperity, and happiness into his life.
The complaint further stated that the accused allegedly dismissed other religions and deities while promising financial assistance if he agreed to convert. Based on these allegations, Pune Police registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to deliberate acts intended to outrage religious feelings and actions carried out with common intent. Provisions of the Foreigners Act were also invoked in the case.
Police officials arrested the two adult accused while the minor was released into the custody of his mother. Investigators seized mobile phones and are examining electronic evidence to determine the full circumstances surrounding the allegations. Authorities have stated that the matter remains under investigation and that no conclusions should be drawn until all evidence is reviewed.
The incident has revived public debate regarding religious conversions allegedly carried out through promises of financial assistance, emotional appeals, or claims of guaranteed prosperity. Critics argue that faith should emerge from genuine spiritual conviction rather than material incentives or assurances of personal gain. They contend that individuals facing economic hardship may be particularly vulnerable to such approaches, raising concerns about whether decisions are truly voluntary.
