The Uttar Pradesh Police expanded its investigation into the alleged mass religious conversion case in Sitapur district following the arrest of pastor David Asthana and several other individuals. Authorities are examining the financial activities of an NGO associated with Asthana, with particular attention to alleged violations of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA).
David Asthana and his wife, Rohini Asthana, were arrested after a case was registered against them under the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021. The police alleged that the couple was involved in organizing activities aimed at converting large numbers of people to Christianity in Sitapur district. In addition, four Brazilian nationals were detained and questioned regarding their possible involvement in the case.
According to police officials, preliminary investigations revealed that Asthana had received substantial foreign contributions from countries including the United States, South Korea, Brazil, Kenya, and Argentina. Authorities claimed that several financial transactions were not properly disclosed and have therefore become part of the ongoing inquiry. Investigators are examining bank accounts, donation records, and financial documents linked to the NGO. The police have also questioned the organization’s chartered accountant and sought extended custody of the accused for further investigation.
The inquiry has led to additional arrests. Police stated that several local residents allegedly assisted in organizing religious gatherings and persuading villagers to attend church meetings. According to investigators, these gatherings were often presented as prayer meetings and social events. Authorities believe that local associates played a significant role in expanding the network over several years.
The case originated from a complaint filed by a resident of Shahbazpur village, who alleged that a large gathering involving more than two hundred people had been organized for conversion activities. The complaint also named four foreign nationals who were reportedly present during the event.
Police further stated that information about the gathering was received after local residents and community groups raised concerns regarding alleged conversion activities in the area. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities examining allegations related to religious conversion, foreign funding, and the involvement of local and international individuals. Any final determination regarding the allegations will depend upon the outcome of the legal process and judicial review.
