At least one-security personnel was killed and five others injured in Tripura in an ambush by suspected tribal rebels on Monday. Sources said a commandant of the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) narrowly escaped the attack on his battalion when the militants ambushed the convoy in state’s Dhalai district in the wee hours. The suspected rebels opened indiscriminate firing and lobbed grenades at the patrol party, but the rebels escaped into the thick forests as the soldiers retaliated. The injured were rushed to a hospital in state capital Agartala where condition of the two is reported to be serious. K Reang, Commandant TSR, said they have cordoned off the area and launched a combing operation. ?It was an incident of ambush. One police hawaldar was killed and others are injured. No group has been identified,? he told reporters in Agartala city. It was second such attack on the security force within a week. On Tuesday three workers of a state-run gas firm on their way to surveying a site were killed by tribal rebels belonging to underground National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT). The NLFT is fighting for a separate homeland for minority tribals in Tripura, one of eight states in India’s restive northeast.
